Woodward ESENET CANopen to Modbus TCP Gateway PN 8445-1044 & 8445-1046 - For easYgen Genset & LS-5 Breaker Controllers

Product Overview

The ESENET Gateway, part numbers 8445-1044 (standard) and 8445-1046 (extended industrial variant), is a dedicated DIN rail communication converter co-developed by Woodward and proconX. It acts as a transparent protocol bridge to translate CANopen signals from Woodward easYgen series genset controllers, LS-5 circuit breaker controllers and DTSC-200 modules into standard Modbus TCP Ethernet communication, enabling seamless integration with modern industrial PLC, SCADA systems, touch HMIs and remote monitoring platforms.
Designed exclusively for Woodward distributed power control ecosystems, one ESENET unit supports up to 16 CAN-connected Woodward devices. Its built-in high-speed data buffer eliminates repeated CAN bus polling, delivering faster visualization refresh rates compared to traditional serial Modbus links while reducing CAN network load. Operators can monitor real-time generator metrics, acknowledge alarms, adjust setpoints and remotely start/stop gensets through Ethernet-based master systems, and even access all controller parameters via Woodward ToolKit software over LAN/WAN without local CAN cable connections.

Core Product Features

  1. Dual-Bus Protocol Conversion (CANopen ↔ Modbus TCP Server)

  2. CANopen master port to connect easYgen-1000/2000/3000, LS-5, DTSC-200

  3. 10/100Mbps RJ45 Ethernet running Modbus TCP server for PLC/SCADA/HMI access

  4. Internal data caching stores all genset status, power values and fault codes locally to speed up data response

  5. Multi-Device CAN Network Support

  6. Single ESENET manages a maximum of 16 Woodward CAN nodes; for complex fleets exceeding 8 units, multiple ESENET gateways can be deployed to separate CAN1 (control) and CAN3 (load sharing) buses for stable communication without bandwidth congestion.

  7. Full Remote Operation & ToolKit Compatibility

  8. Native driver support for Woodward ToolKit software over Ethernet:

  9. Remote online configuration and parameter modification of all connected genset/breaker controllers

  10. Real-time alarm viewing, counter tracking and fault diagnosis

  11. Remote start, stop, breaker open/close and alarm acknowledgement commands

  12. Simultaneous access by HMI/PLC and ToolKit without communication conflict.

  13. Two Scalable Topology Modes for easYgen-3500 & LS-5 Systems

  14. Small-scale system (≤8 CAN nodes): Bridge CAN1 and CAN3 load-sharing buses into one ESENET for unified monitoring

  15. Large-scale multi-group fleet (>8 nodes): Deploy separate ESENET gateways on CAN1 (genset control) and CAN3 (breaker load sharing) buses to isolate data traffic and avoid communication lag

  16. Compact DIN Rail Industrial Hardware

  17. Standard DIN rail mounting design for cabinet integration; wide industrial operating temperature range, robust EMC compliance meeting CE industrial standards, ideal for stationary power plants, offshore oil & gas, mining and marine vessels.

  18. Pre-Configured Woodward Data Mapping

  19. Predefined Modbus register tables match Woodward controller address layouts, eliminating custom programming work. Woodward provides ready-to-use demo templates for Proface AGP3600 and mainstream touchscreen HMIs to accelerate commissioning.

  6. Remote vessel power system supervision via shipboard PLC/HMI with Ethernet-based ToolKit maintenance.

  7. Mining Remote Off-Grid Generation

  8. Unified visualization for scattered generator sets without on-site CAN wiring access.

  9. Commercial Campus CHP & Peak Shaving Systems

  10. Remote setpoint tuning and automatic load-dependent start/stop control via central building management system.

Working Principle & System Topology

All Woodward genset and breaker devices exchange real-time speed, power, alarm and breaker status via CANopen bus to the ESENET gateway. The gateway buffers all data locally and responds instantly to Modbus TCP read requests from upper-level control systems. Downward Modbus write commands (remote start, droop adjustment, breaker control) are converted into CANopen SDO/PDO messages and transmitted to target controllers.
For easYgen-3500 units with independent CAN3 load-sharing bus, ESENET can either combine CAN1/CAN3 for small fleets or operate independently on each bus for large-scale systems, ensuring load-sharing communication is never disrupted by SCADA data polling.

Order & Deployment Guidance

  1. Single small genset system (≤8 easYgen/LS-5): Select one ESENET 8445-1044

  2. Multi-group power plant with more than 8 CAN devices: Deploy multiple ESENET gateways (8445-1046 recommended for heavy industrial environments)

  3. When easYgen-3500 CAN3 load-sharing bus carries high data traffic, separate ESENET hardware must be assigned to CAN1 and CAN3 buses to prevent communication delays.

  4. All configuration is completed via gateway built-in web server and Woodward ToolKit; no extra programming software required for standard monitoring functions.
