560CMR02 is the core CMU communication master unit for Hitachi Energy RTU560 remote terminal unit series. Equipped with 32-bit AR Cortex-A8 processor, 6 multi-mode serial ports, dual 10/100Base-T Ethernet, battery-backed RTC and optional dedicated security chip. Two variants deliver standard and enhanced cybersecurity for transmission, distribution, renewable and industrial substation automation, fully compliant with IEC EMC standards. Manufactured by Hitachi Energy Germany AG.

Overview

The 560CMR02 Communication Unit (CMU) is the central processing and communication backbone of the high-performance RTU560 remote terminal unit portfolio, engineered by Hitachi Energy (formerly Hitachi ABB Power Grids) for complex substation automation and grid SCADA systems.
Occupying two slots in the RTU560 rack chassis, this industrial-grade master module serves as the Serial Peripheral Bus (SPB) master, orchestrating all rack-mounted I/O modules. It executes real-time process data acquisition, remote command issuance, multi-layer cross-network communication, plant-wide time synchronization, and embedded web-based local HMI access.
Two hardware variants are available to meet differentiated grid cybersecurity compliance requirements:
  1. 560CMR02 R0001 (Order Code: 1KGT036300R0001)

  2. Standard baseline cybersecurity functions, ideal for conventional distribution substations and legacy grid retrofit projects.

  3. 560CMR02 R0002 (Order Code: 1KGT036300R0002)

  4. Embedded dedicated security chip delivering advanced encryption, access control and threat prevention, meeting strict modern power grid cybersecurity standards for key transmission substations and renewable energy central control stations.

All technical specifications, mechanical designs, and electromagnetic performance fully comply with the official 2020 datasheet issued by Hitachi Energy Germany AG, Mannheim.

  8. Hardwired connection to RTU560 rack backplane for high-speed bidirectional I/O data exchange.

Power Consumption & Status LED Indicators

Power supplied via RTU560 backplane:
  • 5 VDC: 600 mA

  • 24 VDC: 4 mA low power draw

Front panel LED status signalling:
  • RUN (Green): Normal module operation

  • ERR (Red): Solid = fault state; Blinking = warning state

  • T/R: Serial port transmit / receive activity

  • S: Ethernet speed indicator (On = 100 MBit/s, Off = 10 MBit/s)

  • L: Ethernet link status (On = link established, Blinking = data activity)

Mechanical & Connection Specifications

  • Chassis Occupation: 2 standard rack slots

  • Backplane Connector: 48-pin Type F DIN 41612

  • Operating Environment (per EN 60068 series standards)

    • Continuous operating temperature: -25 °C to +70 °C

    • Short-term maximum temperature (up to 96 hours): +85 °C

    • Minimum startup ambient temperature: -40 °C

    • Relative humidity: 5 % to 95 %, non-condensing

Key Functional Capabilities

1. Centralized I/O Module Orchestration

As SPB bus master, the 560CMR02 uniformly manages all analog and digital I/O modules within the RTU560 rack. It captures real-time process events from input boards and transmits remote control / regulation commands to output boards with millisecond response latency.

2. Multi-Layer Cross-Device Communication

  • Upstream connection: Interact with central SCADA dispatch systems and local station HMI via RS232 serial or Ethernet

  • Downstream connection: Communicate with subordinate RTUs, protection IEDs, multi-function meters, PV inverters, and wind turbine controllers via RS485 serial or Ethernet

  • Native support for mainstream power industry communication protocols over both serial and Ethernet media

3. Station-Wide Precision Time Synchronization

Generates a unified time reference for the entire RTU560 rack and synchronizes all connected I/O modules. Accepts timing inputs via backplane clock source, serial port, or Ethernet LAN to guarantee consistent event timestamps for post-fault analysis.

4. Embedded Web Server Operation

Integrated web service accessible via dual Ethernet ports. Field technicians view real-time measurements, alarm logs, module health status, and configuration data via standard web browsers, eliminating the need for proprietary software and simplifying on-site commissioning and maintenance.

5. Industry-Grade Electromagnetic Compatibility

Fully compliant with IEC 61000-4 series Class 3 immunity criteria for harsh substation environments:
  • IEC 61000-4-2 ESD: 8 kV air / 6 kV contact

  • IEC 61000-4-3 RF radiated field: 10 V/m

  • IEC 61000-4-4 Fast transients: 4 kV

  • IEC 61000-4-5 Surge: 2 kV

  • IEC 61000-4-6 Conducted RF interference: 10 V

  • IEC 61000-4-18 Damped oscillatory waves: 2.5 / 1 kV

All immunity tests achieve Performance Criterion A (continuous error-free operation during disturbance).
