Functional Characteristics

Microprocessor

The VMIVME-7750 features the Intel Pentium III processor with 32-bit addressing and a 64-bit data bus. Its superscalar architecture executes up to three instructions per clock cycle, while a dynamic branch prediction unit, separate instruction and data caches, and MMX technology further enhance performance. The processor provides 256 Kbyte of advanced transfer cache (512 Kbyte at 1.26 GHz) using a dual independent bus architecture, with L2 cache operating at the same clock frequency as the processor.

DRAM Memory

One 144-pin SDRAM SODIMM supports a maximum memory capacity of 512 Mbyte. The DRAM is dual-ported to the VMEbus.

Super VGA Controller

The built-in 815E chipset AGP graphics adapter provides high-resolution graphics and multimedia-quality video, complemented by 4 Mbyte external synchronous DRAM cache with a 64-bit data interface. Resolutions up to 1,600 × 1,200 × 256 colors (single view mode) are supported.

Ethernet Controllers

Two Intel Ethernet controllers (one 82559 and one internal to the Intel ICH2) support 10BaseT and 100BaseTX via two RJ45 connectors. Remote LAN booting is supported through Lanworks BootWare, with NetWare, TCP/IP, and RPL network protocol support, boot sector virus protection, comprehensive diagnostics, and a dual-boot option for selecting network or local booting.

Serial, Keyboard, and Mouse Ports

Two 16550-compatible serial ports are provided on the front panel, each with a 16-byte FIFO supporting baud rates up to 115 Kbaud. A combined PS/2 keyboard and mouse connector is also provided, with a Y-adapter cable included.

Flash Memory

Up to 1 Gbyte of IDE CompactFlash memory is accessible through the secondary IDE port, and the BIOS includes an option to boot from Flash memory.

Timers and Watchdog

The board provides two 16-bit and two 32-bit user timers (in addition to system timers), all mapped in I/O space and fully software programmable. A software-programmable watchdog timer can be configured to cause a reset, a nonmaskable interrupt (NMI), or a VMEbus SYSFAIL on timeout.

Nonvolatile SRAM

32 Kbyte of nonvolatile SRAM preserves its contents when +5V power is interrupted or removed.

USB

A front-panel dual-connection hub host controller supports isochronous data transfers, asynchronous messaging, self-identification and configuration of peripherals, and dynamic hot attachment.

VMEbus Interface

The VMEbus interface is based on the Newbridge/Tundra Universe IIB high-performance PCI-to-VME interface.

System Controller

The board can operate as a Slot 1 system controller or be disabled when another board acts as system controller. Programmable arbitration modes include Round Robin (RRS), Single Level (SGL), and Priority (PRI). The system controller provides a SYSCLK driver, IACK* daisy-chain driver, VMEbus access timeout timer, and a programmable arbitration timeout (16 or 256 µs).

VMEbus Requester

The microprocessor can request and gain control of the bus using any VMEbus request line (BR3* to BR0*) under software control, programmable for Release-On-Request (ROR), Release-When-Done (RWD), or VMEbus Capture and Hold (BCAP) modes.

Mailboxes and Interrupt Handling

Four 32-bit mailboxes are accessible from both the microprocessor and the VMEbus for interprocessor communication, with the ability to interrupt the microprocessor when accessed by VMEbus. The interrupt handler monitors and can respond to any or all VMEbus IRQ* lines, with normal-process and error-processing interrupts mappable to PCI INTA# or SERR#. A software interruptor can issue interrupts on any or all seven VMEbus interrupt lines (IRQ7* to IRQ1*).

Byte Swapping and DMA

To accommodate both little-endian (Intel 80x86) and big-endian (680x0) modules, the VMIVME-7750 incorporates independent byte-swapping hardware for both master and slave interfaces, under software control. A special "bypass" mode is available when endian conversion is not needed. The board supports high-throughput DMA transfers of bytes, words, and longwords in both master and slave configurations.

Master and Slave Interfaces

  • Master Interface: MA32, MBLT32, MBLT64 (A32/A24/A16, D32/D16/D8(EO), BLT32), with nine separate memory windows into VMEbus resources (4 Kbyte to 4 Gbyte each).

  • Slave Interface: SAD032, SDB32, SBLT32, SBLT64 (A32/A24/A16, D32/D16/D8(EO), BLT32), with eight separate memory windows into PCI resources, each programmable for coupled or decoupled mode.

Enhanced Bus Error Handling

A latch and register allow the SBC to read the VMEbus address that caused a bus error in all modes. Support is provided for bus cycle timeout and assertion of bus error regardless of system controller status, with the option to assert an interrupt upon bus cycle timeout.
