Key Features and Benefits

Space-Saving Design

The IZMX16 is the smallest air circuit breaker worldwide, with a volume of only 0.024 m³ and a front surface of just 0.092 m²—slightly larger than an A4 sheet of paper. Its innovative design allows two withdrawable circuit breakers to be installed side-by-side in a 600 mm wide section, enabling more economical switchgear design and saving valuable operating space. The IZMX40 offers a depth of less than 400 mm for the drawout version, eliminating the need for additional "copper mines" in the connection area.

Modular Architecture and Common Accessories

The IZMX Series features a modular structure with a common range of accessories across both frame sizes. The efficient "plug & work" technology, accessory drawers, and snap-fit mechanisms allow for easy retrofitting with virtually no tools. This flexibility enables users to quickly respond to changing system requirements. The universal main terminal design offers maximum flexibility—the horizontal terminal can be rotated at installation to serve as a vertical connection.

Advanced Trip Unit Platform: Power Xpert Release (PXR)

The next-generation Power Xpert Release (PXR) trip unit platform provides comprehensive protection and metering capabilities:
  • PXR20 (V-type): Current metering

  • PXR25 (U-type): Power metering, onboard Modbus communication (standard), and optional communication modules

Key PXR features include:
  • LCD with multilingual capability

  • Extended range for pickup value and delay timing settings

  • "OFF" setting for ground fault (G) and non-delayed instantaneous trip (I)

  • MicroUSB for computer connection and configuration

  • Trip test, waveform capture, and diagnostics

  • Zone Selective Interlocking (ZSI) and Thermal Memory on/off

Arcflash Reduction Maintenance System™ (ARMS)

Personnel safety is paramount. Eaton's patented Arcflash Reduction Maintenance System (ARMS) provides a simple and reliable method to reduce fault clearing times and arc flash energy. Using a separate analog trip circuit, ARMS delivers faster signal processing and interruption times than standard digital instantaneous protection. The function can be activated locally via a switch or remotely through communications, and is optional on both PXR20 and PXR25 trip units.

Zone Selective Interlocking (ZSI)

ZSI is a method of controlling circuit breakers to provide selectivity with very short interrupt times for the breaker closest to the fault. By using blocking signals between upstream and downstream breakers, ZSI reduces clearing times significantly—by approximately 150 ms for a fault at position 2 and 250 ms for a fault at position 1 (as illustrated in the catalog). ZSI requires no auxiliary power or additional modules, making setup minimal and application easy.

Standards and Approvals

The IZMX Series complies with major international standards, including:
  • IEC/EN 60947-2

  • UL 60950-1, CSA C22.2 No. 60950-1

  • IEC/EN 61131-2

  • CE marking

  • UL File No. E208621 (Category NWGQ2, NWGQ8)

Environmental and Operating Conditions

  • Operating Temperature: 0°C to +50°C (with derating above 40°C)

  • Storage Temperature: -20°C to +60°C

  • Relative Humidity: 10–95%, non-condensing

  • Degree of Protection: IP65 (front), IP20 (rear)

  • Altitude: Full ratings up to 2000 m; derating factors apply above 2000 m

Applications

The IZMX Series is suitable for four main application areas, each supported by a range of control units:
  • System Protection

  • Motor Protection

  • Transformer Protection

  • Generator Protection

Switch-disconnectors (INX Series) are also available for use as coupler switches between different power supplies.

Selection Criteria

When selecting an IZMX circuit breaker, consider the following fundamental criteria:
  • Maximum short-circuit current at the point of installation (determines Icu, Ics, and Icw ratings)

  • Rated operational current required for the branch circuit

  • Ambient temperature inside the control panel (observe derating values)

  • Circuit-breaker type: Fixed or withdrawable, 3-pole or 4-pole

  • Minimum short-circuit current that the release must recognize

  • Protection functions required (determined by the trip unit selection)

Conclusion

The Eaton IZMX Series air circuit breakers combine compact dimensions, high performance, and modular flexibility to meet the demands of modern electrical distribution systems. With advanced trip unit technology, comprehensive communication options, and a focus on personnel safety through ARMS, the IZMX Series delivers reliable, efficient, and safe power management for a wide range of industrial and commercial applications.
