Brad® applicom® PROFIBUS network interface card: an intelligent solution for industrial communication
Today, with the deep integration of industrial automation and informatization, how to make PC-based control systems (such as SCADA, HMI, MES) efficiently and stably access the industrial field bus is the core challenge faced by engineers. Molex's Brad® applicom® series network interface cards provide plug-and-play and high real-time solutions for industrial communication with its built-in intelligent processor technology and comprehensive protocol support. This paper will focus on APPLICOM PCI1500 S7/v4.0.1 and its PROFIBUS series products, and analyze its technical characteristics and engineering value.

Intelligent communication, without occupying the host CPU
Brad® applicom® network interface card is not a simple protocol converter, but a series of intelligent communication solutions. Its core advantage lies in the on-board intelligent processor technology-each interface card can independently perform the management and processing of communication protocols (such as polling and frame management) without occupying computer CPU resources, thus ensuring extremely fast and efficient application performance.
This design makes the applicom® series especially suitable for SCADA/HMI applications that need high data throughput and customized development projects that need to manage a large amount of I/O data. This series of products has been widely deployed in many industries such as oil and gas, automobile manufacturing, food processing, building automation, and transportation.
Core models: PCI1500 S7 and PROFIBUS series Core models: PCI1500 S7 and PROFIBUS series.
In the applicom® PROFIBUS product line, PCI1500 S7 (engineering model APP-PS7-PCI and subsequent versions) is a PCI interface card specially optimized for Siemens Simatic S7 series PLC communication. The card supports the S7/MPI master station protocol and also supports the FDL sending/receiving function, which can seamlessly interface with an economical PROFIBUS network.
For a new generation of industrial computers that need PCI Express interface, Molex provides PCIE1500S7 model (order number 1120115027), which adapts to PCI Express 1x slot while maintaining the same protocol support capability. In addition, the PCI1500PFB model provides more extensive PROFIBUS protocol coverage, including DP-V0 master station (Class-1 and Class-2), S7/MPI master station, PPI/PPI+ master station, and FDL transmission/reception.
Technical specification: built for industrial sites.
PCI1500 S7 and the same series of PROFIBUS cards are optimized for harsh industrial environments at the hardware level;
Processor and memory: equipped with AMD SC520 processor, 8 MB SDRAM and 1 MB Flash memory (some versions are 16 MB SDRAM/4 MB Flash) to ensure the smooth operation of the protocol stack.
Bus interface: Universal PCI bus (3.3V/5V adaptive, compatible with PCI-X) is adopted to realize hardware plug-and-play.
PROFIBUS port: a 9-pin D-Sub female terminal, supporting the transmission rate from 9.6 Kbps to 1.5 Mbps, with 500V photoelectric isolation, effectively resisting electromagnetic interference on site.
Power consumption and operating temperature: The typical power consumption is 5.5W, and the operating temperature range is 0 °C to +65 °C, which is suitable for the standard industrial computer case environment.
Software Ecology: An Integrated Engineering Tool
The value of applicom® lies not only in the hardware, but also in its complete software package. Each card comes with the applicom® software suite, which includes:
Graphical configuration console and test and diagnosis tools to simplify the debugging process;
Data servers: OPC DA v1.0a/v2.05/v3.0 (including OPC client with source code), Wonderware DAServer, FastDDE/SuiteLink;
Development library: DLL library, which supports MS Visual Studio (.NET/C #/VB/C++/C), Borland Delphi and National Instruments LabWindows CVI/LabVIEW.
This means that engineers can use the same set of configuration tools and development libraries to manage network interface cards with different protocols, which significantly reduces the learning cost and integration time and accelerates the return on project production.
Application Scenario and System Compatibility
Applicom® series cards are specially designed for the following scenarios: SCADA system monitoring factory equipment, HMI panel data acquisition of complex machines, front-end data acquisition of building automatic control systems (such as fire fighting, access control, power distribution, HVAC), and test bench applications such as process simulation and automobile engine verification.
In terms of operating system support, this series of cards covers Windows 7/8/2008 Server/2012 Server (32-bit and 64-bit, including WoW64 subsystem), and supports real-time operating systems such as Linux, VxWorks, and ARDENTIC RTX. A single PC can insert up to 8 interface cards at the same time and run up to 32 protocols in parallel, which provides flexible expansion capability for a complex mixed network environment.
