505 digital controller

For steam turbines

8200-1300, 8200-1301, 8200-1302

brief introduction

This manual introduces Woodward 505 digital governor for steam turbines with single or split actuators.

Released versions are 8200-1300, 8200-1301 and 8200-1302. The following selection table shows the differences.

The difference between packages. Volume 1 of this manual provides installation instructions, introduces the controller, and gives a detailed description of the configuration.

(programming) and operating procedures are explained. Volume 2 covers the use of this controller in specific applications.

Matters needing attention, service mode information and 505 hardware specifications. This manual does not cover the operation of the whole steam turbine system.

Explain. For the operating instructions of steam turbine or power plant, please contact the equipment manufacturer of power plant.

Controller overview

General description

The 505 controller is designed to control single-actuator or double-actuator steam turbines (extraction steam turbines need 505XT version). 505 can be programmed on site, so that a single design can be used in many different control applications, which can reduce the cost and shorten the delivery time. Menu-driven software is used to guide field engineers to program the controller according to the specific generator or mechanical drive application. The 505 can be configured to operate as a stand-alone device or together with the distributed control system of the power plant.

The 505 controller has five PID controllers that can affect the demand of steam flow entering the turbine: speed/load PID controller, auxiliary PID controller, auxiliary 2 PID controller, and cascade PID controller. According to the configuration of 505, these PID have different interactions with each other. To fully understand the PID relationship, please refer to the block diagrams listed later in this chapter. An additional PID can be provided as a separate control loop, which is optional and can be used to drive the independent analog output signal of any single-loop auxiliary control (such as seal gas, gland seal or lubricating oil pressure loop) that may be needed (that is, not to drive the steam valve). When using isolated PID control, it is recommended to select the Enable Read Back Fault option for analog output channels configured as "Isolated PID Requirements". If a fault is detected in the output circuit, this will trigger an alarm in 505. By default, the analog output channel is not configured to generate an alarm when the output circuit fails.

505 drive one or two turbine throttle valves to control one turbine parameter at a time and, if necessary, can be based on

Other parameters limit turbine operation. This controlled parameter is usually rotational speed, but it can be controlled or limited by 505: turbine inlet pressure or flow, exhaust pressure (back pressure) or flow, primary pressure, power output of generator, power plant input and/or output level, compressor inlet or discharge pressure or flow, unit/power plant frequency, process temperature, or any other process parameter related to turbine. For a detailed description of the application, please refer to.
